2.4 Thoughts, and MrT 1st Impressions

Posted in 2.4, BoJ, Magister's Terrace, Paladin on March 31, 2008 by samueltempus

First of all, I’d like to go back in time and slap myself a few times in the face after complaining about the Shattered Sun Offensive world event. Right now, I could care less that I don’t have the Epic Pants of Godliness. And no, that isn’t a link, they’re just so awesome that I had to bold them and make them purple. But seriously 150-200g a day doing very little work is just fine for me. Not to mention the bombing quest rocks. I can’t verify this, but I think I’m the only person in guild that has finished it in one run. The new island looks great, and Blizzard made the mechanics of the event fun, even if long. To see how Mug’thol is doing compared to other realms check this out: us.gorgonnash.info, or here for more specific Mug’Thol info. As for MrT (Magister’s Terrace for the abreviation challenged)…….

Let me just say, the instance looks amazing. It might be one of the best looking instances in the game. We took in 5 characters gear range of mid kara to tier 5, and while it wasn’t hard, it was challenging. Still, we managed to wipe ourselves a fair number of times. The rewards in this instance don’t really live up to it’s difficulty. That’s not true of heroic, but if you’re going to make the regular version as hard as it is, and make it drop blues, at least bump up the item level 5-10 more points. We sharded every single piece of loot. I was tank on Anabelle, and I really want the trinket out of Heroic, but I don’t know that I’m geared enough to tank it yet. It just depends on how much harder the Heroic is. Now I just need to run it on the rogue :)

A little QQ and Other Entertaining Thoughts.

Posted in Addons, Karazhan, Raid on March 26, 2008 by samueltempus

First the QQ. I know blizzard likes the idea of world events, and I have to agree the stuff going on with the Shattered Sun Offensive is neat. However, I’ve been sitting on these badges for weeks and I want some epic pants! It’s the only non-epic item I have. And believe me, I’ve downed Quagmirrian and Netherspite enough times to have epic pants, not epic fail. But, hey, I suppose if it takes a couple more weeks, I’ll live.

As for entertaining thoughts, the same group II that downed all of Karazhan last week (as in two days ago) for the first time went in this time and cleared the whole thing in 3.5 hours. That’s a damn fast 22 badges (that I can’t spend yet). I mean, even with a Elite team of awesomeness, you’d be hard pressed to get 6.28 badges per hour out of heroics….

Now for some of the interesting tidbits about the raid. We took three holy paladins. Yup, no HoTs. Guess what, we one-shotted every boss with them too. In fact the only time we wiped was when our MT pulled three fleshbeasts instead of two following chess. We had 2 rogues and two feral druids, how’s the new bleed effect stuff working? It’s working great. Mobs were dying incredibly fast. WoW Webstats isn’t working with the new combat log yet though, so I haven’t been able to test the accuracy of recount, or see how much bleed damage I caused. At least my mainly ACE’d interface was fairly easy to update, and didn’t crash on the things I couldn’t update.

Group II – Karazhan Cleared

Posted in Gruul's, Karazhan, Raid on March 24, 2008 by samueltempus

After 2 hard months of work, Medivh’s tower stands empty. We’ve been consistently downing all but two of the bosses since week two, but now we’re close to farming Karazhan…

We’ve also downed all of Gruuls, so as a guild it is on farm. Magtheridon and Void Reaver are next. After last night, there’s a ton of progress to be proud of. We didn’t just empty Karazhan last night, we destroyed it. Shade, ugly but one-shotted (drank with 2% left, yuck!); Chess, one-shotted (of course); Netherspite; one-shotted (only 3 beam phases!); Illhoof, one-shotted (with ease); Nightbane, one-shotted (clearly on farm now); Prince Malchezaar, one-shotted (keep that up, and I’ll call the whole place on farm).

What’s next? Tier 5, Zul’Aman and more. Bucklers has come a long way in the last two months, and I don’t know how much of it had to do with my help, nor do I care. I’m just proud to be a member of the guild and to do my part. Let’s keep rocking this end-game content.

New Mount

Posted in Grinding, Mount, Rogue on March 23, 2008 by samueltempus

Two days of grinding Ogres. It wasn’t that bad honestly; here’s the reward!  I’m lovin’ this Cobalt War Talbuk.   I’ll do some more photography in the fuure to point out just how small Samuel looks on this mount, like his rogue invisibility from the front (he’s so small you can’t really see him).   The mount paid for itself from all the venor trash that sold, and I made 100g on top of that.  Not to mention enough flash powder to make it through WotLK.

Anyway, if you want one of these yourself, you just need to kill about 800 ogres in nagrand to farm the Kurneai Rep. Again, it’s really not that bad, and you’ll make money (and about 500-600 netherweave too). If you’re a rogue, you can make even more money / level your lockpicking with the cheap shot macro So go get your shiny new mount today!

Understanding the Paladin Tank

Posted in Paladin on March 14, 2008 by samueltempus

Seriously, Samuel, a Paladin post on your Rogue blog, which is subtitled “Gnome Rogery.” You bet. Although I don’t spend as much time playing on Anabelle as much as I’d like, she is the guild’s best geared and only Lvl 70 Protection Paladin. As such, I thought I’d lay out some of the unique properties of the Tankadin, since sometimes she ends up tanking for the guild.

Every Tanking class has it’s strengths. Here’s a few:

Warriors have some great tank saving abilities, and can gain immunity to Crushing a Critical Blows.

Druids dish out the most damage, are immune to Critical but not Crushing Blows.

Paladins are king of AoE tanking, holding as many mobs as the healers can heal through, and can gain immunity to Crushing and Critical Blows

1.) Paladin Threat Generation:

Paladin Threat comes mainly from holy spell damage (which no mobs in the game have a resistance to). Paladins generate their holy damage from multiple sorces, most of which are fire and forget. Those are: Retribution Aura, Blessing of Sanctuary, Consecration, Holy Shield, and either Seal of Righteousness or Vengeance. Paladins can also generate instant damage by judging seals, using Avenger’s Sheild, or holy wrath / exorcism on undead mobs.

Notice that a majority of the threat generation comes when a mob is hitting us. If someone opens a can of pure DPS on a target before a Tankadin can gain some threat, it can be nearly impossible to get the mob back.

2.) Taunting, A.K.A. saving a squishier player

Warriors and druids can spam taunt to pull a mob off another player. Paladins also have a taunt. It pulls up to 3 mobs off of 1 player. I have it macroed so that I can target the mob and cast it. Here’s the catch; It has a 15 second cooldown, so it can’t be spamed.

3.) Mana, A.K.A. the blue rage bar

Paladins can start every fight with full “rage,” and can frontload some serious threat. Just like the other tanking classes, paladins regenerate rage (well, mana really) by being hit. They just do it in a different way. We regenerate mana by reciving heals. We recieve mana equal to 10% of what we are healed for by other players.

4.) Paladin Pulls

Avenger’s Shield is the main Paladin pulling attack. It has a 40 yard range and will hit up to three targets in range, slowing their movement for a few seconds. It also generates between 1k and 2k threat on the targets it hits, if it doesn’t get resisted. This does happen occasionally, and if a DPS lays into the target, they will pull it. So, it’s always safer to wait until the mob is in the paladin’s consecrate, which they’ll be using to gain threat on the mob they aren’t concentrating on. If everyone is communicating properly, it will be very difficult for any one to pull off the tank.

I’m sure I’ll think of something else later, but those are the basics of paladin tanking and will hopfully provide some insight into how I tank when I’m playing as Anabelle

Posting Again…successes

Posted in Gruul's, Karazhan, Raid on March 14, 2008 by samueltempus

As I have been assured that people actually read this, I am actually going to post again! My guild has seen many achievements since my last post, and I suppose that would be a good place to pick back up.

The second kara group has done very well. Though we’ve only downed prince once (infernals ftl), everyone but nightbane (he’s going down this week) gets downed every week. Last week, we took a huge step forward and organized our first 25 man raid. Granted it wasn’t a full guild run, the majority of people were in the guild. We wiped a lot, but in the end Gruul’s corpse lay before us. I won a dragonspine trophy for the effort, my first piece of new loot in months. It’s kind of weird to get passed in gear by the people you’re trying to help gear up, but I suppose that’s the nature of the beast.

My future plans:

Continue to gear up my paladin (Main tanked kara once already, had kinks to work out with a type of tank many people weren’t used to). Get Samuel some serious PvP gear (vengeful pants incoming soon). Continue my 29 twink hunter ownage until I have 50 WSG and AB marks, then level him up some more. Down Magtheridon and Void Reaver (in that order). And continue to help my guild progress into newer content.
